The Paschal Candle that stands at the altar represents Christ's victory over death and the grave, and is lit to remind us of His Easter triumph which we share by faith.

The Funeral Pall covers the casket during the service in the Chruch.  It is placed over the casket at the start of the service as a reminder of the baptismal promises made by Christ, namely, to cover the sins of God's people and make them white as snow.

From a letter written to Ron Fingerson dated Oct. 1967

We had a pleasant surprise last week.  Ernest Fingerson and wife Esther stopped to see us.  They had come from South Dakota that day.  Saw everyone of Minnie's children and all the grandchildren who live there.  This is the first trip back her since Ernest lived at Terril, Ia, 49 years ago and went to Calif. to live.

We were invited to Carrie Christensen's at Royal last Sunday.  Our cousin Ella Christensen Battin of Minneapolis was there.  She wanted some information on the Fingerson family tree.  There was very little I could give her, but told her you were going to try to get some leads on this big problem.

Have had some part time work at Doane's Agricultural Service.  Mostly typing and some filing.

In every letter I receive from Lola she asks me to come out again.  I was there 6 weeks in June and July. Came back by jet.  That I liked very much.

Notes for EMMA MAY HARRINGTON:

Obituary

Mrs. Ole Fingerson (Emma May Harrington) was born at Clayton, Kansas, on Feb 4 1881.  Most of her childhood days were spent in various places in Illinois, Iowa and S. Dakota.  She received the greater part of her education in public schools of S. Dakota and Iowa and at the Normal School of Spirit Lake, Iowa.  Following her educational training, she taught school for a number of years.

On December 15, 1901, she was united in marriage at Terril, Iowa, to Ole Fingerson, Her much bereaved husband.  This union was blessed with two children, one son and one daughter, Ellsworth Earl and Pearl Lillian, both at home and deeply grieved over the departure of their mother.

In the 1910 the family moved from Terril, Iowa, to Montana and located on a homestead near Harlowton.  From here they came to Billings in 1925.

Mrs Fingerson was converted and became a Christian early in life.  She united with the Methodish Episcopal church in which she served her Savior and Lord faithfully for many years.  In 1927 she changed her church relationship and united with the First Evangelical Chruch at Billings, in which she was until the time of her death a much beloved and faithful member.  She was not only active in church work but was also a staunch defender of Prohibition and supporter of the work of the W.C.T.U., being for a while president of the local Union at Harlowton and later Recording Secretary of the Montana State W.C.T.U. (Womens Christian Temperance Union).

Besides her sorrowing husband and son and daughter she is survived by two sisters and a brother, Mrs. W. F. Birdsall of Billing, Mrs. Roger Merkling of Pendleton, Or., and Roy Harrington of Harlowton.  Besides these she has many friends and neighbors who mourn her departure.

She died at the Billings Deaconess Hospital early Saturday morning, Jan 18, 1930, after only a week of illness following an operation for a long standing affliction, from which she had hoped to speedily and completely recover.  But Providence orderd otherwise.  To Him who has the power over life and death we yield our humble wills.

Funeral services held at the Smith's Undertaking Chapel in Billings in charge of the Pastor, Rev. T. A. Marks, and members of the Chruch and of the local W.C.T.U.

Burial will take place at the Mountview Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, six brothers and sisters.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Minnie's diary:  We lived on a farm in Iowa.  I remember I got to ride in our neighbors canapy top tassel car.  It belonged to the Clumps.  Mrs Clump always called me Pearl and I loved her for that.  My aunts, uncles and cousins lived in and around Spencer.  We would take the train from Milford to Spencer and visit my cousins.  Ella and I couldn't talk Norwegian but Ann Christensen and Julia Nelson could so we didn't know what they were taking about.  Ella and I would walk across the bridge to Nelsons.  Uncle Tom built lots of houses in Spencer.  Uncle Eric was a carpenter too.  I went to school 1 mile east of our place. The folks were Lutheran and then joined the Methodist church.  They wanted us to talk English so I never learned Norwegian.  When my fathers folks came over Emma learned some.  I never saw my grandparents.

I learned to ride a boys bicycle.  I had a blackboard and liked to write the childrens names on it.  I always drew a light house on the blackboard.  I don't know why that appealed to me.  I also liked to make dams when it rained.  We played goal at school and would go pick wild strawberries at noon.  I remember my teacher, Mable Murray.  Her sister, Buealah Murray, Hazel Swawm and I ran away one noon to the Hamiltons, about 1/4 mile away.  The next day, the teacher tied us all up with a rope at noon.  We had 4 months of school in the winter and 3 months in the summer.  The boys missed out in the summer months.

We had a picnic at Austins Grove the last day of school.  The park had swings and someone hit me with the swing board and my nose bled.  The teacher said I wouldn't have to speak my piece but when we had the program my name was read so I had to speak anyway.

We moved to SD when I was 11 years old.  I had the measles so Ma, Lillie and I had to stay with our neighbor in Spirit Lake, then we went to Spencer to visit Aunt May.  Emma and Della, Martins wife, went on with the rest.  I rememer the first person I saw when I got off the train in Esmond, was Rita Barber.  They lived in the depot.

My father and mother had gone to Esmond before and bought the farm, 2 miles west of Esmond.  My father died there when he was 68 years old.  He had heart trouble and just died in his sleep.  Glen was a baby then and we lived east of Esmond by Doug Caffry's.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnie worked in the depot as a telegraph operator. (Author Unknown)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------        Taken from a letter written to Ron Fingerson, July 1, 1987.

I stayed up all night.  Ellsworth had taken Ivah to the hospoital and was staying with her.  I had just come back to Billings from my first year of teaching school in Judith Gap and there was an extra bedroom in the upstairs apartment where they lived.  So I was staying there and helped your mother when she brought you home from the hospital.  Your parents were both heavy sleepers, so if you cried in the night, I was usually the one who got up.

The second summer, Glenn was born before I got back from my second year of teaching in Judith Gap.  I stayed with your folks all that summer too.  Ivah took care of Glenn and you were my boy.

In 1936, I decided to quit teaching, because I disliked living in the tiny towns there in Montana, so I moved back to keep house for my Dad, and made use of the commercial courses I had taken in high school.  I was secretary and assistant bookkeeper for the Elliott Seed Company--Division of the Montana Flour Mills Co.  I made all of $75.00 a month, but I frequently had you boys at our place and I bought clothes for both of you.

Do you remember your first trip through Yellowstone Park with your Dad, Isabel and I.  You boys were very interested in the bears that walked along the roads until suddenly a big bear smelled the sandwiches that we had in the back of the car.  He took his paw and opened the door.  Fortunately, your Dad still had the engine running, so he started the car moving and the bear had to drop off.  You boys immediately said "Don't stop for anymore bears!".

My first cousins, Floyd and Lee Birdsall were bus drivers in Yellowstone Park for several summers.  Floyd married a girl that he met in the Park and later they took the job as winter keepers at a big hotel.  They fed animals and did a variety of jobs.  They had a telephone that they could use but they went for six months without seeing anyone else.  No snowmobiles.

Going back a litle farther in the Park history, Aunt Vera who later became Uncle Roy Harrington's wife, rode in a 7 passenger car that her father, Mr. Ginn of Bozeman owned, in the first group of cars that ever went through Yellowstone Park.  Before that all the buggies, wagons and buses were pulled by horses.

When I taught school, I had two years of college, and was paid $100 per month the first year, $90 the second year at the same job and $85.00 per month the next year at a harder job.  That was during the depression, starting the fall of 1932.

Then I went to buisness college and worked as secretary and assistant bookkeeper for $75.00 per month.

Many things have changed.  Now I get nearly $500 per month from Social Security and a small pension, but my rent is $265 and electric bill $45 in the winter, so I still have to be careful.

Notes for MARTIN J. FINGERSON:

At the time of our mother's death, Ernest, our oldest brother was already working in Los Angeles, Ca.  After our mother's funeral, he and Winford, our next oldest brother, hitch-hiked, rode the rails, drove a Model T Ford (which they bought for $25.00 and later sold for the same amount) finally reached L.A.

In three months, they had saved enough money to buy train tickets for the other four of us; Leona, Ilo, Della and me.  So in August, 1924 all of us children were in Los Angeles, CA., living in a rented house.

Our oldest brother, Ernie, never even got married until we were all graduated from High School.  Winford and Ernie supported us all those years.  They had kept the promise to our Mother to keep us all together.      Per M. J. Fingerson.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll always remember Terril, Iowa, not only because my three sisters and I were born there but because we have so many wonderful memories of that town.

It is also the City where our dad's general merchandise store was located.

Dad sold everything in that establishment; clothing and dress goods, tools to tobacco, and soap to soda pop.

He had three clerks helping him and during the Christmas Season even had some part-time help.  The store was always decorated for special holidays and at Christmas time the decorations were the talk of the town.

My oldest brother, Ernie, althought only a teenager, used to help out sometimes on Saturdays and after school.

Ernie remembered the time when several Indians came in the store to purchase supplies.  The Braves sat around on the floor while the Chief pointed out the items he wanted, to my dad.  Ernie recalled being awed and a little afraid.

Then there were the times when the gypsies came to town.  When the kids in Terril saw that caravan of wagons, they ran home real fast as there was a rumor around that the gypsies kidnapped children and they were never seen again.

Some of the gypsies came in the store.  A few of them would keep the clerks busy while the others would swipe merchandise and hide it in their clothing.  But my dad was on to them and they didn't get away with much.

I was quite small but I remember the wonderful smell of the pickle barrel.  Another great scent I recall was the empty cigar box where the soda pop bottle lids were tossed.  The strawberry and grape scent mixed with the aroma of cigars was a great smell.

Alas!  The M. J. Fingerson General Store, for reasons unknown to me, was closed out in early 1918, and we moved to Arnolds Park.  I have many fond memories of that area also.     Per M. J. Fingerson

From a newspaper clipping (name of newspaper and date unknown)

Pfc Ed Hasenmueller Died On Way Home; Funeral Friday.

Death came to Pfc. Edward J. Hasenmueller Sunday, after returning from New Guinea, the report reaching his wife here only a few hours after she had received a telegram from him stating that he had arrived at Hamilton Field, San Francisco, by plane, had stood the trip well, and was on his way to a hospital nearer home to continue his recuperation after an operaton.

The soldier apparently reached this country Saturday, his wife receiving his telegram Sunday evening.  Two telegrams arrived Monday noon, one from Albequerque, New Mexico, advising her that he was critically ill and could not proceed further, and was being hospitalized there, and a later advice that he had died there late Sunday.

It was a sad instance of a wife being given the joyous news that her sick soldier-husband was back in this country and she would see him soon, only to be advised a few hours later that he had passed away.

Mrs. Hasenmueller was informed that death was due to medical condition, but no further particulars have been learned.

The body arrived Wednesday evening.  Funeral services are to be Friday morning at ten, at St. Thomas Catholic church.

Stores will close for the services.

Private Hasenmueller had been overseas twenty-one months and had been in action.  He was hospitalized some months ago because of stomach trouble and wrote under date of September 18 that he was to have an operation for intestinal obstruction the following day.

His home at Zeeland, N. D., he came to DeSmet in 1941 to join the DeSmet News staff as a printer, was married to Miss Winnifred Miller of this city, and left on selective service call in July, 1942.  He never had a furlough and his wife had not seen him in uniform.

Obituary:  Burton Fingerson

Burton Thomas Fingerson, self-taught mechanical engineer and the father of former Santa Rosa Mayor, Nanci Burton, died Sunday at his home in Santa Rosa.  He was 77.

A native of Gridley north of Marysville, he grew up in Alameda and Oakland.  He came to Santa Rosa in 1944.

He served with a balloon battalion in the Army Air Corps from 1937 to 1940.  In 1943 during World Ward 11, he was drafted to serve again in the air corps.

After the war, he opened an auto shop near Fifth and A streets, now part of the downtown shopping center.  later he operated Burtco, his own mechanical and functional design firm, for 25 years.  Among other things he designed machinery for businesses, said his wife, Margaret E. Fingerson.

His aunt was married to Jesse Frey, an owner of the Mailer Frey Hardware Store located on Fourth Street between D street and Mendocino Avenue.

In the 1950's, Fingerson was one of the early members of the Church of Religious Science in Santa Rosa.

"Daddy started the coffee hour at  chruch," Nanci Burton recalled.

He enjoyed both playing and listening to the organ and was a member of the Santa Rosa Organ Club.

Along with his wife and daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Patricia Anne Tice of Longview, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Trina Stoughtenborough of Modesto, Danny Burton of Sebastopol, Kelley Hunter of Santa Rosa, Carol McLean of Litchfield, Randy Schroeder of Reno and Tommy Uranga and Julianna Ibarra, both of longview, Wash; and Seven great-grandchildren.

At his request, no services will be held.

The family prefers memorial contributions to Home Hospice of Sonoma County or the Church of Religious Science.

Bill and Alice Barkhuff visited us in Glendive; Glenn and I spent part of the summer (1940?) with Ivah in Billings -- I think that may have been the only time (fuzzy memories).
